Can too much social networking cause depression in teenagers?


Some of the biggest demographics in the social networking sites have been made by the teenagers and adolescents. Experts agree that the social networking help them to build stronger ties with their peers. According to the recent report from the American Academy of pediatrics there is also a downside to all this social networking. The report is about the Facebook depression. The report mentions that the teenagers and the adolescents who spend excessive amounts of time on the internet are affected more. The lives of the people, their achievements photos of travel and parties can be showcase in the facebook. According to the report the depression creeps when the teenagers start comparing their friends with themselves. There are some questions like how he was invited to the party and I was not? How he got these awards when I worked harder for it? etc in their daily lives. They get into additional pressure if they were in the social networks. The experts mentioned that these sites will magnify the idea of jealousy and envy. The report were still in assess whether the depression for the teen is caused by the too much use of the facebook or because of the depression the teens already have.
Dr.Micheal Brody an adolescent psychiatrist said that parent should be involved in their life of the teen actively is it online or offline. They must also encourage their teen to get off the internet once in a while. The teen age people must understand that the balance in their life is needed and it is important too. The parents must let them participate in the activities outside of school or IN school activities actively. They must make them get into play a musical instrument, to join clubs or encourage them to get into sport etc. They must watch their kids when they sit in front of the computer or in facebook but at the same they must let the teens enjoy a sense of openness with their friends. The parents must keep an open line of communication with their teens. Though the social networking on the positive side has helped the teenagers to share their thoughts with friends and can have new friends. The depression can be for moms and dads and it based on the life style of their kids. A new study has very clearly said that even the parents can be affected by the depression and it will be more if they had teenage children.
