Feds to Remind District Schools that All Student Aliens or not are entitled to Public Education
As School districts plans for the next school year U.S. Department of Education sends out letter reminding school heads that all students legal or are not are entitled to public education. The letter comes in response to reports are checking immigration papers and nationality proofs of students who are trying to enroll. The letter also stressed that schools are strictly prohibited from baring students from elementary and high school on the basis of citizen status. Supreme Court has already made a ruling on this case since 1982 on a case of Plyer v. Doe.
The Office of Civil Rights is already actively investigating on three cases of the same nature, and is now evaluating a complaint by Southern Poverty Law Center against schools in Durham County NC. The complaint is on discrimination of Latino students being denied from school admission unless they have citizen status documents.
