Come Wednesday the public expects that President Barack Obama will announce how to proceed on his promised withdrawal of US troops deployed in Afghanistan. This is will be the fulfillment of the president’s self imposed deadline on bringing back the troops. Since Obama took office he ordered a surge of troop’s deployment in which he promised that in exchange he will have to start withdrawing them by July of 2011. His plan is to give the new Afghan government’s security forces enough time to recover and take full control of their nation’s security.

Now that Obama is coming to conclusions on his plans his administration looks divided on this issue. He is now weighing option on how to go ahead with the withdrawal of US troops. Options like how many will be withdrawn by this month and on the succeeding months. Most of his advisers believed that the time is ripe to get the troops home, while most of the army general believed that pulling out a considerable number of army from Afghanistan could put the nation’s security at risk. For sure For sure extremist groups like the Taliban would see this opportunity to attack. Al-Qaida who has declared vengeance and retaliation from the death of their leader Osama bin Laden which is the highlight of America’s war on terror is also likely to seize the opportunity.

A group of 27 Senators has sent a letter to Capitol Hill asking Obama to make significant withdrawal of the surge that prolonging the war on this foreign land will not yield any benefit. Given the success of killing the terrorist leader in Pakistan, they said that it’s about time that Obama call his troops home. When the public was asked on a poll whether they agree to this withdrawal some 80% of the respondents say that they approve with the president’s plan to call home his troops, while 15 percent believes otherwise. On the late 2009 Obama sent a surge of troops around 30,000 men to Afghanistan. Now the total headcount of US troops in this country is near 100,000. His aides say that it took Obama a lot of thinking to go with the surge tactics. Now that he is deciding on withdrawing them they are far confident on the president as he now more knowledgeable about the situation in Afghanistan.
